The IRS mistakenly informs thousands of people that they will not receive their aid check

2021-02-05T22:25:11.898Z

A delay in the processing of tax returns causes a federal agency mistake that affects more than 100,000 people.

Are you one of the more than 100,000 people who received a CP21C letter from the Internal Revenue Service telling you that you will not get your stimulus check to offset past due tax debt for 2007?

Ignore the notification -

the IRS reported this as an error.

“We applied a credit to your 2007 tax account due to the new legislation.

We use all or part of your economic stimulus payment to pay your federal taxes as allowed by law.

[...] As a result, you do not owe us money and you are not owed a refund, "says letter CP21C.

“This notice is not accurate to anyone who has received it.

Since no payment was issued, no offsets occurred.

We apologize for any confusion

this may have caused.

You can ignore the notice, "explained the IRS.

Taxpayer advocate Erin M. Collins said the IRS has outdated technology systems that use an outdated programming language, and for that reason the system may have sent the letters by mistake.

"Unfortunately, taxpayers are affected by the IRS 'problems issuing the correct correspondence," said Collins, who asked Congress to fund an overhaul of the agency's technology infrastructure.

"I know the IRS has its challenges, and we are all trying to be patient because of the pandemic. But at the same time,

these are things that just shouldn't be happening,

" he said.

Collins urged the IRS to send another letter to inform taxpayers that the information received on the CP21C document is incorrect.

Nine million people are waiting to receive aid payments for COVID-19.

The first one, at $ 1,200 per person, was approved last spring.

The second, for $ 600, was approved by Congress in December.

Congress set deadlines for the IRS to release the aid, but the federal agency has not yet been able to process all of the tax returns from last season.

Faced with the backlog of 2019 returns, it sent the CP21C notice to inform people that they would have to wait until they filed their 2020 return to receive the aid.
