Faster, but not yet fast enough: The Weilheim-Schongau district brings up the rear in the Oberland

A fast internet connection has never been as important for citizens as it was in the Corona lockdown.

The Weilheim-Schongau district is now better positioned for home offices than it was two years ago.

In the Oberland comparison, however, it still lags behind when it comes to fast internet.

District - Five years ago, the then Federal Minister of Transport Alexander Dobrindt gave the go-ahead for the federal funding program for broadband expansion.

With the aim of establishing nationwide coverage with 50 Mbit / s by 2018.

As is well known, the target was missed, and in 2021 it will still not be achieved everywhere.

The figures from the Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) speak for themselves.

In the ministry's “broadband atlas”, which is updated annually, the gaps in the supply of fast Internet are mercilessly shown.

There are still some gaps in the Weilheim-Schongau district: from connection rates of 100 megabits per second (Mbit / s) and more, it is left behind by the other three in the Oberland.

After all: 94 percent of households are traveling with 50 Mbit / s and more

According to the broadband atlas, 94 percent of households in the Weilheim-Schongau district are currently on the move with 50 Mbit / s and more.

This is still within the average of the Oberland.

From 100 Mbit / s, the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Miesbach already hurry.

The backlog in the supply of ultra-fast broadband connections of 1000 Mbit / s is particularly noticeable: 67 percent of households in the Miesbach district are equipped with corresponding connections, in Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen and Garmisch Partenkirchen the figure is 60 and 55 percent respectively.

Weilheim-Schongau is still a long way behind with 46 percent.

Not bad, but the others are better: In the Weilheim Schongau district, 94 percent of households can get 50 Mbit / s.

But not even half of it has access to ultra-fast connections (1000 Mbit / s).

A clear east-west divide can be seen in the district itself.

Only the small municipality of Schwabbruck stands out in the west with its fiber optic network, which was completed in 2018.

Anyone who wants can get up to 1000 Mbit / s in the almost 1000-souls community.

This gives the village a unique selling point in the Pfaffenwinkel.

In the east of the district, too, a small community stands out with its offer

In the east of the district, too, there is a small community that stands out from the rest with its range of services: Obersöchering offers almost three-quarters of the population a fiber optic connection right into the house and thus bandwidths that other communities can only dream of.

In Wessobrunn in particular, there is currently great dissatisfaction.

Mayor Georg Guggemos complains that there has been no “progress” in broadband expansion so far.

The necessary construction work has not yet started, "and even the detailed planning that was promised by autumn 2020 is not yet available, despite multiple inquiries," the town hall chief describes the dilemma that citizens now have to pay for in lockdown.

It is not down to the town hall: “The community is ready to go, the funds are ready to be called, and the budget is taken into account,” said Guggemos.

He takes Telekom, with which a contract was signed in 2019, responsible: "The fiber-optic expansion must be implemented as quickly as possible."

In Schongau and Peiting, the number of fiber optic connections is still very manageable

This is also hoped for in Peiting, where, like in neighboring Schongau, the number of fiber optic connections is still very manageable.

“At the moment, the main problem is the lack of executing companies for our contractor, Telekom,” reports Mayor Peter Ostenrieder, who also observes another “very banal problem”: “Everyone calls for a broadband connection, but if it is available , a lot of people take out a 36 Mbit contract, ”he knows.

"The operator then naturally asks himself why he should install a fiber optic cable."

Most recently, the providers in interaction with the municipalities were in Penzberg and Weilheim.

But the offer in Rottenbuch and Böbing has also improved significantly.
