As the Lunar New Year is approaching, Baiwu Tengguijia’s listing is not good, and it is not easy for the grassroots to pass this year.

An investigation by a group found that due to the lack of public markets in some areas, residents were forced to help private markets "suffer high prices."

The Public Market Development Alliance previously compared the prices of food ingredients in 12 public and private markets in Tung Chung, Tsuen Wan and Tin Shui Wai respectively. The results found that Link's Tung Chung Fu Tung Market was the most expensive, while the cheapest one was The Tin Shui Wai Food and Environmental Hygiene Department's Tin Shui Wai Temporary Market (formerly known as the Tin Shui Wai Temporary Market) opened at the end of last year.

The group pointed out that although the government has announced that two public markets will be built in Tung Chung, it has not announced the blueprint, urging the government to announce the details of the plan and the timetable for the project as soon as possible, and find a place to build a temporary market during the blank period before completion. Meet the daily needs of residents.

In the 2018 government policy address, it was proposed to build public markets in Tin Shui Wai, Tung Chung, Kwu Tung North and Tseung Kwan O. However, it took a long time and there was no blueprint for the project. It was pointed out that residents had no choice but to help private markets suffer from the high prices. .

The Supervision Public Market Development Alliance recently (3rd) sent personnel to 12 public and private markets to investigate the prices of food ingredients, including Tin Shui Wai T-market, Tin Chak Market, Tsuen Wan Market, Heung Che Street Market, Tung Chung Fu Tung Market and Yat Tung Street City (Hong Kong Market) etc.

During their investigation, they learned that the grassroots residents of Tung Chung went to the public market in Tsuen Wan to buy food from time to time, so they also compared the market prices in the two districts.

The alliance compares the prices of 13 items of 7 types of ingredients such as cabbage, broccoli, chicken wings, ribs, American apples, etc. In terms of overall prices, the overall price of the 13 items in the temporary market in Tin Shui Wai is the cheapest ($315.5); as for Link The T-market and Tin Chak Market are respectively $348.3 and $350.8, which are more than 10% more expensive than the temporary market in Tin Shui Wai.

As for the two Link Markets in Tung Chung (Fu Tung Market and Yat Tung Market), which are supported by more grassroots residents, their prices are generally more expensive than Tsuen Wan. Their overall prices are $422.30 and $385.6 respectively, which are more expensive than Tsuen Wan Market ($373.1). About 13% and 3%.

The public market in Tin Shui Wai South will not be completed until 2027 at the earliest. The Tianmu Market, which opened in December last year and is located next to the Tin Sau Road Park, is a temporary market as a transitional measure before the completion of the permanent public market. It took only one year to complete.

Although the survey found that the market has the lowest prices, Yang Jianbin, the organizer of the Tin Shui Wai Community Development Front, pointed out that there are often promotional activities for market openings, and long-term prices will not be seen until several months later. There are also neighbours who report that their perception of the market is not as expected. Because the number of stalls is too small to meet the needs of residents, the government is required to speed up the construction of public markets in the area to avoid residents suffering from expensive food for a long time.

Chen Wanlin, organization officer of the Tung Chung Community Development Front, pointed out that the four markets in Tung Chung are all private markets at present. The monopoly situation is serious under the group operation. In addition to high prices, there are few choices of goods.

She pointed out that for example, there are many Indian and Pakistani residents in Ying Tung Village, but there are no beef stalls in the market; Tung Chung residents would rather take a special trip to Sham Shui Po or Tsuen Wan to buy food for a week.

Chen said that although the government has announced that two public markets will be built in Tung Chung, the blueprint has not been announced and the public is unable to monitor it. The government urges the government to announce the details of the plan and the project timetable as soon as possible. In the blank period before the completion of the public market, the government should Find a place to build a temporary market to meet the daily needs of Tung Chung residents.

The Supervisory Public Market Development Alliance, Leung Pui-shan, said that public markets are the basic facilities of the community. The government is responsible for building public markets in new towns and conducting public consultations. The completion of the market takes several years. The government should refer to the container construction of the temporary market in Tin Shui Wai. The method is to be completed within one year to cater for the needs of residents in the district.

In addition, the Alliance believes that the FEHD should also be responsible for the operation and management of public markets. However, the FEHD has contracted out the management of the Tin Shui Wai Temporary Market to Kin Wah and has failed to fulfill its responsibilities.

After the revitalization of the Mountain View Market, the railway-style design was reopened, and the snack street was open until midnight
