Hamburg - Greens forbid single-family houses: Goodbye dream home

Single-family houses are no longer allowed to be built in Hamburg-Nord, other municipalities will follow. The new green living ideal comes from the east.

Do you dream of owning your own home?

More space for you and your family, a small garden with barbecue and children's swing?

Then I have a tip: hurry to build before it's too late.

Just like in Hamburg-Nord.

The green district office manager Michael Werner-Boelz has been ruling there for a year and has decreed: The single-family house building type no longer fits our times: too much space consumption, too much building material, comparatively poor energy balance.

The development plans have already been changed.

In districts like Fuhlsbüttel and Langenhorn, where Helmut Schmidt once lived in a semi-detached house, you will no longer get a permit for a new home.

The district manager says: "We have to build higher to accommodate more people."

Anyone reading the Greens' program must assume that this could also prevail in other parts of the city and municipalities.

The ban on single-family homes results from a party congress resolution for a “building turnaround” from November 2019. The Greens there meticulously calculate how much sand and gravel (“200 tons”) per home “we can no longer afford that”.

The new green residential ideal looks like this: Get out of the townhouse with pellet heating, into the renovated prefabricated housing estate.

A later triumph of the GDR housing policy: Nowhere should the ecological footprint be smaller than in Berlin-Marzahn and other satellite settlements in East Germany.

The East German playwright Heiner Müller spoke of "fuck cells with district heating".

I have no doubt that the Greens have done all the calculations correctly.

The human being grabs space and consumes resources;

who lives, sins, that is the ecological dilemma of our existence.

On the one hand.

On the other hand, the single-family house is still the most popular form of living.

In the Corona shutdown, the longing for a house with a garden should have even grown, even among Greens voters.

The trend towards home offices also speaks in favor of a house in the suburbs.

The question is how the Greens leaders Annalena Baerbock and Robert Habeck will overcome this resistance.

The Greens no longer want to be a ban party, but, according to Habeck, want to score with a »policy of enabling«.

Your party congress resolution, however, has plenty of measures ready for a new "funding and regulatory law";

so much for voluntariness.

And isn't there a certain contradiction when a party campaigns for chickens and pigs to replace cage with free-range farming, but not for humans?

"The members of a free, democratic society need living and working spaces that express appreciation, equality and positive creative power," says the Greens decision.

The propaganda sounded like that in the GDR for the prefabricated building.

The East German playwright Heiner Müller put it differently at the time.

Apartments in the plate are "fuck cells with district heating."
