Khamenei: We will return to abide by the nuclear agreement only if the United States removes the sanctions

The Iranian leader has rejected the possibility that Tehran will repeal the steps it has taken since the Trump administration withdrew from the agreement, saying the Biden administration should lift the sanctions first.

"Once we make sure all sanctions have been lifted, we will return to full compliance"

Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei said today (Sunday) that the United States must lift all sanctions imposed on it if Washington wants Tehran to repeal the acceleration of the nuclear program.

"Iran has fulfilled all its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal, not the United States and three European countries. If they want Iran to meet its obligations again, the United States must remove all sanctions first," said Khamenei, who met with Air Force personnel.

"Once we make sure all sanctions have been lifted, we will return to full compliance."

U.S. President Joe Biden, who took office last month, said that if Tehran reiterated its restrictions on the deal with the powers, Washington would follow suit and use it as a basis for a broader agreement that should include Iran's missile program and operations in the region.

Iran refuses to do so.

Former United States President Donald Trump withdrew from the nuclear deal in 2018 and reinstated sanctions on it as part of the "maximum pressure" policy.

Iran has gradually breached its commitments, such as restrictions on its uranium reserves and its level of enrichment, but it claims it can lift them quickly provided sanctions are lifted.
