River festival: marquee instead of Sydney look

Despite the pandemic, the river festival in Wolfratshausen is to take place in July.

However, there will be a different setup on the site.

  • From July 9th to 25th the river festival is to take place again at the old raft landing in Wolfratshausen

  • Instead of a grandstand and the imposing opera tent, there will be a marquee this year

  • Cabaret artists and musicians can perform there in front of 200 visitors

Wolfratshausen - Over 7,000 visitors in two weeks, 400 guests close together on a grandstand: the usual image of the river festival does not fit into the time of a global pandemic.

The city council's culture committee has therefore decided on a different structure for the festival site.

Instead of a grandstand and the imposing Opera Tent, which is reminiscent of the Sydney landmark, this year a marquee with raised rows of seats is to be built on the old raft landing.

The program - 18 events are scheduled between July 9th and 25th - remains unchanged.

"The ongoing pandemic has made it a complex matter to create sensible planning," said Marlene Schretzenmaier from the culture department in the meeting on Thursday evening.

She is confident that events will be possible again in the warmer months.

Schretzenmaier does not expect that this can take place without any restrictions.

That is why she presented the committee with various options for ensuring the distances between the spectator seats.

Significant cost savings

The unanimous choice of the committee fell on a departure from the characteristic stage.

A marquee where cabaret artists and musicians can perform in front of 200 visitors was popular.

The costs of 9,000 euros mean savings compared to the otherwise 25,000 euros expensive package consisting of an opera tent and grandstand.

"It's about giving the event industry a chance - but also keeping an eye on our finances," said Third Mayor Annette Heinloth (Greens), who chaired the meeting.

Dr.

Ulrike Krischke (citizens' association) wanted to “show confidence and send a positive signal” by sticking to the festival.

She is sure that the audience will accept the offer: “Artists and citizens are starved for culture.” To make the series of events possible, “the costs and benefits are more important than the look of the opera tent”.

Peter Lobenstein, parliamentary spokesman for the Greens, also found it “more important that it take place at all than to keep the cute look” that one is used to.

It's about giving the event industry a chance - but also keeping an eye on our finances.

SPD parliamentary group leader Fritz Meixner wanted the vote to be seen as a “clear commitment to the river festival”.

Nevertheless, he pointed out that “we will have to talk about it again in April or May”, which should still be taken into account in view of the corona pandemic.

At the moment it is simply not foreseeable how the number of infections, hygiene requirements and event guidelines will develop by the summer.

"I don't want to create a corona hotspot," he emphasized.

A cancellation at this point in time would cost the municipality dearly: the city would have to pay around 70,000 euros in cancellation fees.

Should the festival be forbidden by law, "it is force majeure for which we do not have to pay," emphasized Schretzenmaier.

Solution allows flexible planning

According to the Third Mayor Heinloth, the decided marquee enables "very flexible planning".

Should events be possible until summer without a distance requirement, the ticket contingent could increase to up to 800 seats per event.

The grandstand previously used only offered space for 430 people.
