Pope Francis on Sunday February 7 expressed his "
solidarity with the Burmese people
" after the military coup, and urged the army to work for "
democratic coexistence
".
The sovereign pontiff, who visited Burma in 2017, said he was following "
with great concern
" the coup by the Burmese military who overthrew the civilian government of Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday.

At this very sensitive moment, I again want to assure the Burmese people of my spiritual closeness, my prayer and my solidarity,
" he declared at the end of the Angelus' prayer in the Vatican.
"
I pray that those who are responsible in the country will commit themselves with sincere availability to the service of the common good, promoting social justice and national stability, for a harmonious democratic coexistence
", added the Pope, who s 'addressed from the balcony of his residence to the pilgrims gathered in Saint Peter's Square.
