Israel and Greece announced today (Monday) in principle agreement on mutual recognition of vaccine certificates.

The move is expected to later allow vaccinated citizens from both countries to fly to each other without restrictions.

Under the emerging agreements, tourists from both countries who are vaccinated for corona, subject to the presentation of an official certificate that they are vaccinated, will not be required to perform a corona test up to 72 hours before departure.

Vaccinated Israelis who arrive in Greece will also be exempt from a random corona check upon landing, and from an isolation period.

Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi, who was scheduled to meet with Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dandias, welcomed the move.

"I would like to congratulate the Greek Government and my friend, Foreign Minister Nikos Dandias, on the agreement reached in principle regarding the mutual recognition of vaccine certificates. This agreement is made possible thanks to cooperation between the Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Tourism, Transport and Health," Ashkenazi said.

"This is an important achievement at this time for the two countries, which will continue to promote the renewal of the route for tourists to enter the two countries."

In the background of the diplomatic meeting is the desire to upgrade the regional alliance between Israel and Greece and Cyprus.

The Greeks are a little worried about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's smile on Israel, and also want to discuss the Turkish issue and Greece's tensions with Turkey over gas drilling in the eastern Mediterranean basin, and coordinate positions with Israel in the wake of US President III's entry.
