2021-02-08T18:31:25.118Z

The station, which has partnered with Airbnb, wants to ride the city dwellers' desire for change following the lockdowns.

The Airbnb rental platform and the municipality of La Clusaz, in Haute-Savoie, are launching a communication campaign to promote life in the mountains.

They offer the rental of a fully equipped chalet for a month for the sum of 1 euro.

This offer is aimed at a couple or a family who would like to try their hand at a new life.

Through this very special announcement, the municipality hopes to show that it can be more than a resort and attract new residents throughout the year.

La Clusaz, like other ski resorts, must reinvent itself at a time when the coronavirus crisis is leading them towards a white season and teleworking offers new possibilities of installation.

With the Airbnb rental platform, they decided to show another aspect of this life in the mountains.

For this they launched an unusual announcement: for one euro, a couple or a family will be able to experience a new life in the mountains for a month.

From April 10 to May 10, they will live in a comfortable chalet.

The municipality hopes that this will make the occupants aware of the possibility of living and working in the village.

And to help them integrate, they will be greeted by snowboard champion Mirabelle Thovex, licensed at the La Clusaz club, who will serve as their guide.

Ski resorts must reinvent themselves

Any couple or family of French nationality can apply.

Just contact the host on the Airbnb page between February 6 and 21.

However, the municipality is primarily looking for people likely to transform the trial into a longer term facility.

This is why several questions are asked to understand the intentions and the degree of motivation of the candidates.

A jury will then choose the project deemed most interesting for the municipality.

For the others, the town hall reminds that many accommodations in the mountains are available on Airbnb for a month or more at very varied prices.

The village, which until today has staked everything on seasonal tourism, wants to rebalance its model: of the 5,000 homes in La Clusaz, 4,200 are for seasonal rental.

A situation such that it is increasingly difficult to find year-round accommodation.

Also, the town is experiencing a demographic decline.

Since 1999 we have lost around 200 inhabitants

”, explains the town hall.

This situation has led to a real awareness of the importance of diversifying its economic model, to leave more room for those who would like to live in this station all year round and the Covid crisis is only accelerating things.

The mountain must reinvent itself

” says Emmanuel Marill, CEO of Airbnb Europe, Middle East and Africa.

The goal is therefore to surf the development of teleworking, and to show that La Clusaz is more than a ski resort, but has many assets likely to attract a very large audience.

The municipality puts forward “

the living environment

”, but also professional infrastructures “

a good internet connection and a coworking space has been created

”, or even the location “

Annecy is very close and Geneva is not very far neither

”.

For Airbnb, the goal is to expand its core business.

In recent months, more and more French people have been looking for long stays.

According to the platform, in 2020, comments with the words “remote work”, “moving” or “discovering a new neighborhood” increased by 128% compared to the previous year.

Today changing your place of residence is not the same upheaval as before.

Thanks to teleworking, we can move and keep the same job,

”explains Emmanuel Marill, who adds:“

we think this trend will continue to accelerate after the Covid and we want to show that this offer is also on Airbnb

”.
