Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov criticized the European Union’s attempts to make the issue of Russian politician Alexei Navalny the basis for dialogue with Russia and to undermine relations between the two sides.

Novosti news agency quoted Lavrov as saying that Moscow has never been the initiator of undermining relations with the European Union and has the will to normalize them on the basis of mutual respect and taking into account the interests of each party.

Lavrov added, "What caught my attention was that the Commissioner for Foreign Affairs and Security in the Union, Josep Borrell, after his visit to Moscow from the 4th to the 6th of this month, published a number of comments on his blog, including one trying to portray that Russia is moving away from Europe".

He added, "I spoke during the negotiations with Borrell in Moscow about the importance of building relations between the two sides on a systematic basis."

The Russian Foreign Minister stated that in 2014 the European Union deliberately undermined the structure of multi-faceted relations with Russia, which had been built with painstaking effort over the years, adding, “On our part, we confirmed again in the Moscow talks this month, our intention to normalize relations with the Union not on the basis of unilateral demands. But on the basis of mutual respect and taking into account the interests of the other party.

In the same context, Lavrov referred to Germany's admission to provide Navalny with information on Russian President Vladimir Putin from the archives of the German authorities, indicating that the latter would not have obtained this information to film the palace without cooperating with foreign intelligence.

Lavrov added, "What worries Moscow is how a file from the German archive belonging to Putin, according to the filmmakers, reached those filmmakers without his permission ... We went to the German Foreign Ministry to clarify this issue, as we were informed a few days later that Navalny's acquaintance with the above-mentioned archive materials had taken place Approved by the competent German bodies ”.
