(CNN) -

It is common for many politicians to become more popular once they leave office.

That has not been the case for former President Donald Trump.

On the eve of his impeachment before the Senate, a new poll reveals that more Americans want him convicted than at any other time during his first impeachment a year ago.

More surprisingly, more people want Trump banned from holding national office again.

A new ABC News / Ipsos poll released Sunday shows 56% of Americans are in favor of the Senate condemning Trump and banning him from holding federal office in the future.

Only 43% oppose such action.

This is simply the latest poll to find a clear plurality of such a measure, even after Trump left office.

A Monmouth University poll conducted in late January indicated that 57% wanted to be barred from holding federal office and 52% wanted the Senate to condemn it.

Every poll in the past month that I could find that it met CNN standards has shown that at least 56% of Americans want to be barred from holding or seeking (depending on the question) a federal office again.

That is, to put it mildly, a surprising percentage.

At no point in the past year, in polls between Trump and now-President Joe Biden, was Biden ever close to 56% favorable on the national average.

Trump Loses His Impeachment Team Amid Unwavering GOP Loyalty

This means that there are likely millions of Americans who voted for Trump last year who now want to be barred from holding federal office.

In fact, although about 80% of Republicans (depending on the polls) do not want Trump to be barred from running or holding federal office, this still indicates a clear drop in support from last year.

Trump won more than 90% of the vote of the people who declared themselves Republicans.

A historical opposition

In general, this type of opposition to a sitting president or former president after a term is historic.

No other president after a period in polling history had an unfavorable rating or a disapproval rating above 50%.

On the much tougher issue of being removed from public office, Trump is above that milestone.

Regarding the conviction specifically, there appears to be a slightly smaller majority in favor of such action.

An average of 51% of Americans in live interview polls conducted since January 20 are in favor.

A minority of 43% oppose this.

This difference of 8 points has basically remained the same for the last month.

When the Senate acquitted Trump after his first impeachment trial in 2020, the gap between supporting and opposing impeachment was 4 points.

It never reached the 8 points it has now.

For a historical comparison, no other president, except for Richard Nixon, has had a majority of Americans who have said that the House should impeach him and the Senate will condemn him.

Just weeks before Nixon resigned, a clear majority believed he should be indicted and removed from office.

Of course, Trump is not likely to be convicted (or barred from running for federal office) because his Republican support, while low, is still above 80%.

Republicans have 50 Senate seats and 67 votes are needed for a conviction.

But Trump's likely acquittal should not be confused with support among the broader electorate.

The bottom line is that Trump is still quite unpopular and many Americans want nothing to do with him.
