A gendarme was seriously injured Sunday by a motocross on the island of Saint-Martin, in the West Indies, while he was carrying out a control operation to fight against armed robberies and wild rodeos, said the gendarmerie.

The accident happened while bikers were performing a wild rodeo in Bellevue, a neighborhood near the border with the Dutch part of the Caribbean island.
The soldier of the gendarmerie was struck by a motorcycle, in a roundabout, on a road control device.
Supported by the emergency services in serious condition, he was in stable condition Monday morning.
The pilot of the two-wheeler who hit the gendarme fled in the direction of the Dutch part of the island, witnesses report.
Since the upsurge in armed robberies and wild rodeos, the gendarmerie has put in place a reinforced system.
The gendarmerie commander, based in Guadeloupe, is traveling to Saint-Martin on Monday as part of this serious incident.
Fifteen years ago, a gendarme was struck in the same circumstances, during a wild rodeo, and did not survive his injuries.
