The renovation work in the east wing of Schlehdorf Abbey is making good progress.

There is still a need for clarification with the Free State regarding the stairwell.

The matter is complex.

Schlehdorf

- At the end of 2019, the Munich housing association (Wogeno) acquired the Schlehdorf Monastery from the Missionary Dominicans.

However, the prerequisite is that Wogeno can also use and convert it as planned.

As reported, a mixture of living and working areas is created.

There are also areas for public events and educational work.

Since the takeover by Wogeno, the project has been called "Cohaus Kloster Schlehdorf".

The renovation work is divided into the east and west wings.

Construction phase one in the east wing is about to be completed.

House manager Johannes Hochholzer expects completion in the coming weeks.

The first residents moved in last autumn (we reported), and there were also educational events and concerts before the outbreak of the corona pandemic.

Now the Cohaus is also inactive.

“We used the time to renovate the guest rooms,” reports Hochholzer.

There are single and double rooms for a total of 20 people.

Fire protection issues need to be clarified

The east wing should be completely finished in March or April, so the first phase of construction will be finished.

“We will then have a properly usable house,” says Hochholzer.

The manager also means this in relation to ongoing negotiations with the Free State.

This includes the large staircase ("prelate staircase"), which is located between the east and west wings.

This is about important fire protection issues.

The Wogeno needs a usage permit or would buy it.

However, the negotiations are tough and have been dragging on for months.

“It's very complex,” says Hochholzer.

Many details turned out to be "very complicated".

It is also a special situation for the Free State to deal with a monastery sale.

With regard to the official structures, Hochholzer speaks of a “special case” that requires “a good look” on many levels.

Nevertheless: “There is still no signal whether we can buy the staircase or whether there is another contract.” At least one is now ready to conclude a contract that regulates the legal situation in the event of a fire.

With regard to the staircase, Hochholzer speaks of “a final stumbling block that would hold us back from securing the future of the monastery”.

"Very good exchange with the secondary school"

Talks with the parish are still ongoing.

Here, too, it is a question of space use.

Last summer, both sides were confident that they would find a good solution in the foreseeable future.

After all: “We have a very good exchange with the Realschule.

Both with the school management and with the institution, the archdiocese, ”reports Hochholzer.

The same applies to the community.

The councils can currently use the ballroom in the former monastery for municipal council meetings.

According to Hochholzer, local associations have also already inquired whether and how they can use rooms.

The Wogeno is open to them.

"It is very important to us that the house can be used by many."

The current six permanent employees come from Schlehdorf and the surrounding area.

Wogeno hopes to cautiously begin the guest and seminar operations in the east wing in the course of this year.

In any case, the demand is there.

Construction phase two in the west wing is also scheduled to begin in 2021.

The former hospital ward of the Missionary Dominicans is being converted into living areas, and the large kitchen is being prepared.

The refectory will be converted into a modern lounge and dining room.

The chapel remains as it is.
