At the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Blantyre, Malawi, oxygen is depleted. Small hospitals don't have. Many people now choose to die at home. The increase in cases would have been caused by a migrant workforce that returned and introduced the variant of the virus detected for the first time in South Africa. It is a threat that can only be finally eradicated with a vaccine. But, for now, in a continent of 1.2 billion people, the vaccine has been applied to only 25 people. African nations as a whole could only vaccinate a significant number of their population in a two-year period, long enough for the virus to potentially mutate over and over again. CNN's David McKenzie had exclusive access to the work of hospitals and doctors in Blantyre and that of the Médecins Sans Frontières team working non-stop to fight the wave of covid-19. So we can show the audience what is at stake.
