Irish flanker Peter O'Mahony, sent off at the start of Sunday's match against Wales in the Six Nations Tournament, has been suspended for three matches, the tournament organization said on Tuesday.
In the 13th minute of play, O'Mahony had returned dangerously into a regroup, his shoulder hitting the head of the opposing pillar, which had earned him a direct red card from the referee.
His team ended up losing 16 to 21. The player admitted to the disciplinary committee that his expulsion was deserved.
The commission took into account the absence of injury of the opposing player to classify his act as an offense of "medium" seriousness, which normally involves six weeks of suspension.
But O'Mahony's attitude after his gesture and during the hearing, as well as the study of his background, led the commission to halve this sanction, which runs from February 7 to March 14.
O'Mahony will therefore miss the reception of France and trips to Italy and then Scotland.
On the other hand, he will be available again for the reception of England, on the last day of the Tournament.
