Alicia (12) from Poing suffers from a rare form of blood cancer.

She urgently needs a stem cell donation.

A world has collapsed for the family.

Poing

- It started with a headache.

End of November 2020. "We thought it was coming from the computer and the cell phone," writes Michele Gomes via WhatsApp.

The poinger cannot make a phone call, she is not allowed to leave the room in which she is with her daughter Alicia.

And she doesn't want to disturb Alicia with a phone call.

The twelve-year-old is in the Schwabing Children's Clinic with the diagnosis: Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS).

A form of blood cancer.

Poing: Alicia (12) suffers from blood cancer - the disease occurs only very rarely in children and adolescents

The Internet information portal kinderkrebsinfo.de explains: “MDS is the most common malignant disease of the bone marrow in older people; it occurs very rarely in children and adolescents.

In children under the age of 14, MDS is seen in fewer than two cases per million children a year.

This corresponds to about four percent of all blood cancers in childhood and adolescence.

In Germany around 30 children and adolescents are diagnosed with MDS every year. "

After a few days, the headache was gone, writes Michele Gomes.

In December, 43-year-old mother and father André (45) noticed Alicia's bruises on her knees and arms.

“We didn't think of anything bad because Alicia always plays wildly with our dog,” says the mother.

"My maternal instinct kept telling me that something was wrong"

From December 25th, Michele Gomes noticed that Alicia was very pale and constantly tired.

On January 4th, she went to the pediatrician with her daughter, and a blood draw and test was scheduled for a few days later.

“But my mother's instinct kept telling me that something was wrong,” writes Michele Gomes via cell phone.

On the advice of the pediatrician, she took Alicia to the children's clinic in Schwabing.

"I left around 6:35 pm, at 11:55 pm Alicia was immediately admitted to the oncology department and my world was broken." She went to the parking lot to tell her husband, "Then I screamed like a little child ".

Because of Corona, Alicia's father was only allowed to go to his daughter briefly and "give a kiss very quickly," writes Michele Gomes.

Michele Gomes is not allowed to leave the hospital room because of Corona, she is regularly tested for the Covid-19 virus.

The worst that could happen now: That Alicia will get sick with something else, corona, flu, whatever.

Your immune system is weakened.

After Alicia came to the children's clinic, bone marrow and other exams followed;

the girl has had transfusions and IV fluids.

After a few days, Michele, André and Leticia (Alicia's ten-year-old sister) were examined - "unfortunately we are not stem cell donors for Alicia," writes Michele Gomes.

That is why the Gomes family (Michele and André are native Brazilians, they have been living in Poing for five years) asks that people register themselves with the German Bone Marrow Donor Center (DKMS).

You can order a package online for a smear, take it yourself in the mouth and send it back to DKMS.

People aged 17 and over can register.

“Alicia is just a little girl.

And now her world is only machine, infusions and transfusions, ”writes mother Michele Gomes.

Anyone who wants to register with DKMS can find all the information at www.dkms.de.
