Honduras: protests demand clarification of death of detained student

Dozens of people demanded justice in the municipality of La Esperanza, Honduras, after the death of Keyla Martínez, detained on Saturday.

Dozens of people demanded justice this Monday in front of the police station in the municipality of La Esperanza, in western Honduras, after the death of the nursing student Keyla Patricia Martínez Rodríguez, 28, who was under the custody of the police authority of the municipality, his birthplace.

The anti-riot group of the Honduran National Police evicted the protesters from the scene with tear gas.

The young woman was arrested on Saturday.

The initial police report affirms that his arrest was due to suspicions of incurring in public scandal and of not complying with the night curfew imposed in the country by the covid-19 pandemic.

That same weekend he died.

The agents in charge of his custody were suspended this Sunday.

They claim the young woman tried to commit suicide and died in the hospital where she was taken.

In that medical center they respond that he arrived without vital signs.

Jair Meza, a spokesman for the Honduran National Police, told CNN that they are trying to determine what happened in the cell where she was being held.

He added that several teams carry out the rigorous procedures in the area and hope to provide more details of the case soon, which has generated condemnation and uncertainty in social networks and in the streets.
