Pebble Beach Pro-Am: without Dustin Johnson, finally absent

2021-02-09T12:08:00.171Z

PRESENTATION - Last minute package just hours after his victory at the Saudi International (European Tour), Dustin Johnson, the undisputed world No. 1, will not be the attraction of this tournament weighed down by his amateur players because of the crisis sanitary.

For its 75th anniversary, the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am (created in 1947) will have this week in California a format very different from other editions.

Indeed, given the health crisis linked to Covid-19 and as had already been the case from January 21 to 24 at the American Express (South Korean victory Si woo Kim), amateur players are not authorized on the site.

Only the 156 professionals will thus compete not on three but only two courses with a cut intervening after 36 holes (instead of 54 usually).

No Monterey Peninsula Country Club on the program this year.

In 2021, the tournament is limited to the Pebble Beach Golf Links (par 72 of 6,447 meters) and the Spyglass Hill Golf Course (par 72 of 6,438 meters).

The two weekend tours are planned for the first city, host we remember the US Open 2019 which saw the victory of Gary Woodland.

Winner for the second time (in three editions) of the Saudi International (European Tour) last weekend, Dustin Johnson was to be at the start of an event that he greatly appreciates (winner in 2009 and 2010, six times in the top 10 in 13 departures).

But the current world No. 1 has finally withdrawn, without giving any explanation.

We will therefore follow with interest the performance of veteran Phil Mickelson, soon 51 years old, also present in Saudi Arabia last week (53rd).

The San Diego left-hander is indeed aiming from Thursday for a sixth success at Pebble Beach.

In the last game in 2020 on Sunday, he lost to Canadian Nick Taylor, the future winner, finally taking 3rd place behind his compatriot, Kevin Streelman.
