Poland: Two Holocaust investigators sued for libel were ordered to apologize
A court in Warsaw has ruled that Barbara Engelking and Jan Grabowski must apologize to an 81-year-old woman who accused her of defaming an aunt in a study they did on the involvement of Poles in the murder of Jews.
However, her claim for compensation was denied.
The ruling, which has been followed by many for fear of harming Holocaust research in the country, can be appealed

A court in Warsaw ruled today (Tuesday) that two world-renowned Holocaust investigators must apologize to a woman who sued them for defaming her aunt in a study they authored, according to which he aided the murder of Jews in World War II.
The decision is not final and can be appealed.
The two historians charged are Barbara Engelking, of the Polish Center for Holocaust Studies in Warsaw, and Jan Grabowski, a professor of history at the University of Ottawa.
However, the court did not rule that the two should compensate Philomena Leshchinska with one hundred thousand zlotys ($ 27,000) as her lawyers requested.
According to the testimony in a study compiled by the two historians, Edward Malinowski, one of the elders of the town of Malinow, he saved a Jewish woman by allowing her to pass as a non-Jew.
However, in his testimony he admitted that he was involved in the deaths of dozens of other Jews.
He benefits from cooperation with the Germans in a trial held for him after the war.
The 81-year-old niece is supported by the Polish Anti-Defamation League, a group close to the Polish government and from which she has previously received grants.

The future of Holocaust research in Poland depends on a lawsuit against two historians

The group claims that the two historians are to blame for the "defamation of his good name" by a Polish hero, who she says was not involved in harming Jews, and in doing so they are in fact harming the dignity of all Poles.
This is the first media case dealing with Holocaust studies in the country since the Warsaw government tried in 2018 to pass a law that includes prison sentences for those who accuse the country of responsibility for the Holocaust.
Imprisonment was lifted due to international pressure and a crisis with Israel, and was replaced by fines.
The present case is a civil lawsuit filed under an earlier law, but many experts believe it will set an important precedent for the freedom of Holocaust research in the country.
