An earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale hit the southeastern Loyalti Islands, western Indonesia, today, without any reports of casualties or damages.
"Serious tsunami waves are expected in some coasts," Xinhua quoted the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the US National Weather Service as saying.
The center indicated that tsunami waves with a height of 0.3 meters to one meter above the tide level are likely to occur in some coasts of Fiji, New Zealand and Vanuatu, and the epicenter of the earthquake, which occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers, was initially determined at the meeting point of 23.1 degrees south latitude and 171.5 degrees east longitude.
