The City of Paris intends to participate in the transformation of the area surrounding the cathedral. Fifty million euros could finance a vast

The National Assembly follows like milk on fire the progress of the Notre-Dame site.

This Wednesday morning, Brigitte Kuster (LR), president of the information mission for the monitoring of the restoration of the Paris cathedral, spoke big money with Emmanuel Grégoire, first deputy mayor (PS) of the capital in charge of town planning and architecture.

Enough to take stock of the international competition that will be launched in the spring on the redevelopment of the surroundings of the monument.

1. 50 million euros for works around the cathedral

“Anne Hidalgo

(Editor's note: the mayor of Paris)

has pledged to give 50 million euros for the renovation of Notre-Dame, which naturally includes the surroundings.

The public establishment takes care of the cathedral, which falls within its competence.

In agreement with the government, we will take care of the renovation, rehabilitation and redevelopment of the square and its surroundings, ”Emmanuel Grégoire clarified.

In this budget, the City also intends to integrate, in agreement with the public establishment in charge of the restoration of Notre-Dame, the evaluation of the occupation of the right-of-way of the site but also the compensation of the car park concessionaire who has had to stop operating.

These are the “side effects” of the work, as the First Deputy pointed out.

2. No work before 2025 on the forecourt

“Within a month, the mayor of Paris will have arbitrated the contours and orientations of the international competition on which we are working in close collaboration with the Elysee, the Ministry of Culture and the Public Establishment.

We will then be able to include its launch on the agenda of the Council of Paris, ”announces Emmanuel Grégoire, setting out the timetable for this vast operation.

The objective is to present to the Paris Council in April the specifications given to the teams of architects and town planners in order to launch the competition in the spring.

“This type of project legally requires six-week consultations.

But we felt that this would not be enough.

We think we will devote several months to consultation, this will allow the candidates to be widely involved, ”said the elected official.

Work on the square will not begin before the end of the cathedral construction site.

“It will be returned to worship, as planned, in 2024. But the work will continue beyond.

We hope to be able to guarantee the start of the surrounding area in 2025. In the meantime, we will prepare in masked time everything that can be done to start work as quickly as possible, ”emphasizes Emmanuel Grégoire.

3. Work on the surroundings ... "in the broad sense"

Here again, the reflection is in progress.

The surroundings of the cathedral could indeed be considered in a broad way.

The square, but also the square Jean-XXIII as well as the neighboring streets, "in order to have a global coherence", considers the elected official.

All this will be studied with the diocese, the town hall of Paris Center but also with associations of local residents and traders.

4. Objective: improve the flow of visitors

While the idea of a “small Louvre carousel” had been suggested to describe the scope of the work to be done, Emmanuel Grégoire wanted to clarify certain points.

"There will be no shops in the basement", repeatedly hammered the elected.

The objective of the program is "to improve the reception of the public, parishioners and tourists", he insisted.

"Harmony" is the watchword of the operation which should allow "redrawing the square", while preserving the perspective on the building.

The question of an "emergence" still arises, without having the favors of the mayor.

“Above all, we need to improve the flow to the cathedral and ensure complementarity with the archaeological crypt.

"

A ticket office should be created, not to charge entry to the site, but to ensure security.

Sanitary facilities, luggage storage and an educational space could also be set up there.

The diocese, for its part, is considering creating a museographic space in another site.

5. A good height under ceiling to privilege

It is therefore in the basement that a large part of the program must be thought out.

It will be located at the location of the current parking lot.

“It has an area of 6000 square meters on two levels.

The question arises of whether or not these two levels are maintained, which would then be low, ”described the elected official.

The reflection seems to focus more on a single space of 3000 square meters but with a beautiful height of ceiling.

Enough to expand the site, even before entering the cathedral.
