The U.S. Coast Guard rescued three Cuban citizens whose boat capsized near a lone island in the Bahamas and stayed on the island for 33 days.

"It was amazing. I do not know how they did it. I was amazed to see how good they were," Coast Guard officer Justin Doherty told CNN.

The three were located during a routine air patrol of a U.S. Coast Guard plane, which spotted the three and documented them on Anguilla Kay Island, a small, desolate island located between the IQ West in Florida and Cuba.

The three, two men and a woman, waved an improvised flag so that they could be seen from above.

The Coast Guard dropped them emergency doses of water, high-energy food and a radio transmitter.

The next day a rescue ship arrived on the small island and picked up the three, who had been flown for treatment in the territory of the United States. The boat of the three, apparently fleeing immigrants, was wrecked in the Caribbean Sea and they swam to a nearby island. They subsisted on rainwater and coconuts and apparently were not injured or ill. They set up an improvised tent from the remains of the boat and waited for rescue
