singer Mary Wilson died
unexpectedly at the age of 76.
As a founding member of the US girl group
"The Supremes"
, the
American
wrote
music history between 1959 and 1977 and made R&B music
socially acceptable
in the

With a changing line-up,
“The Supremes”
reached first place in the US
Billboard charts
with a total of twelve singles
and are thus on a level with superstar Madonna and ahead of Whitney Houston with eleven number 1 hits.
Songs like
“Baby Love”

“Stop!
In the Name of Love ”
or
“ You Can't Hurry Love ”
are still known worldwide today and enjoy great popularity.
The latter was created in 1982 by British superstar
Phil Collins
covered and thus reached number one in the UK
charts
16 years after its first release
.
“The Supremes”
had their most successful period
in the mid-1960s with
Diana Ross
as the front woman and lead singer.
Mary Wilson
took over
the backing vocals
with
Florence Ballard
and, after Ross retired, the role as front woman.
During this time, the three singers were the best known and most successful group of the Detroit
record label
Motown Records
and were only surpassed by the Beatles in terms of international fame.

broke up in 1977 when

left the band to pursue her solo career.
The
US singer released
two solo albums and wrote her autobiography "Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme", which became a bestseller in the US.

Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame.
The
world star
continued to appear on stage in
recent years
and took part in the US show
"Dancing with the Stars"
in
2019
.

Mary Wilson dies unexpectedly - Motown founder is "extremely shocked"
Mary Wilson
died
in Las Vegas
on February 8, 2021
at the age of 76.
Two days earlier, the singer had announced in a YouTube video that she was currently working on the release of previously unreleased solo material.
"Hopefully some of this will come out on my March 6th birthday," said
Wilson
.
The cause
of
Mary Wilson's
death
is not yet known.
Motown
founder
Berry Gordy
told
Variety magazine that he was
surprised by
Wilson's
sudden
death
.
"I am extremely shocked and saddened to learn of the death of a member of the Motown family."
Mary Wilson has
two children and ten grandchildren.
