One of the leaders of the protest movement against restrictions on abortions in Poland is accused of a series of criminal offenses, and she says this is a political attempt to increase the pressure on its activities.

Marta Lampert told the Associated Press today (Thursday) that the charges against her were read out yesterday in the Warsaw District Prosecutor's Office, and they include insulting a police officer and creating an "epidemiological threat" due to organizing demonstrations during the Corona epidemic.

Under Polish law, the penalty for this offense is between six months and eight years in prison.

In addition, Lampert, one of the leaders of the "Polish Women on Strike" movement, was also accused of praising the destruction of churches and "malicious disruption" of religious prayers.

This is after in an interview she gave on the radio during the protests, she expressed sympathy for demonstrators who interfered with masses, and the spray-painting of graffiti on churches.

The charges against her were filed in parallel with concerns raised by the European Union regarding the erosion of the rule of law, the rights of the proud community and freedom of expression in a country controlled by the nationalist Law and Justice Party.

She said in almost all cases the courts have dismissed these charges.

The demonstrations erupted in October, after the Constitutional Court banned abortions in the case of fetal defects, and they became the largest anti-government protest movement against the government in Poland since the fall of communism more than 30 years ago.

The decision went into effect late last month.

MEPs strongly condemned the abortion restrictions earlier this week, and most said it marked a violation of women's rights.
