US President Joe Biden last night imposed sanctions on military leaders in Myanmar who led the military coup in the country, where the wave of demonstrations against military rule continued today (Thursday).

Biden said in a special statement that the military should "give up the power it seized" last Monday, and called on it to release all prisoners, including civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi and President Wein Maine, and stop repressing the protesters.

He said he had approved a presidential decree, including a $ 1 billion freeze held by the Myanmar government in the United States to prevent the generals from accessing them.

The names of those who will be subject to personal sanctions have not been named, but one of them is expected to be the junta leader and other senior generals already on the US sanctions list since 2019 for the Rohingya genocide.

"We are going to enforce close controls on imports from Myanmar," Biden said.

Biden, facing the first international crisis of his tenure and testing his promise to put human rights issues at the center of his foreign policy, said Washington is ready to take further steps and work with other states to put joint pressure on coup leaders.

The US administration may impose sanctions on companies of the military that have investments in the banking, gems, copper, communications and clothing sectors.
