Massoud Mulawi, opposition to Iran's regime, shot dead in Istanbul (edited by Shaul Adam)
A diplomat from the Iranian consulate in Istanbul has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in the assassination of an opponent of a regime in the city in 2019, the Turkish newspaper Daily Sabah, which is close to the Turkish government, reported today (Thursday).
According to the report, Muhammad Raza Nasrzada is accused of forging travel documents for Ali Espanjani, who is considered the mastermind behind the assassination of Massoud Mulawi, to smuggle him to Iran.
Mulawi, a former intelligence official, moved from Iran to Turkey, where he launched a campaign on social media aimed at exposing corruption among regime officials.
He was shot to death in November 2019 in the heart of Istanbul.
The name of Nasrzada, who works in the civil registry department at the consulate, came up during the interrogation of a suspect in aiding the smuggling of Espanjani from the country.
The Iranian diplomat was arrested earlier this week after a court issued an arrest warrant for him.
According to Nasrzada, he was not in Turkey at the time of the murder and he denied that he knew any of the suspects.
The same suspect in aiding the smuggler of the assassination planner said he saw Nasrezda and another suspect pick up Aspenji after landing in Tehran.
Mulawi settled in Istanbul in June 2018 after fleeing Iran following an investigation opened against him.
He posted on social media posts about corruption involving government officials and Quds Force members in the Revolutionary Guards in Iran.
According to the report, Espanjani befriended him and passed on information about him to Iranian intelligence.
He even accompanied Mulawi to his murder scene.

The Daily Sabah reported that the investigation found that the murder suspect, Abdulwah Kochak, linked to an escaped Iranian drug baron, met with Espanjani before the murder.
The Baron, Naji Sheriff Zindeshti, is also accused of involvement in the disappearance of Habib Cheb, another Iranian opponent who disappeared from Turkey in October.
Cheb, who lives in Swedish exile, was reportedly lured to Istanbul by Iranian intelligence and abducted to Iran.
Thirteen suspects have been arrested since Molway's assassination, including the shooter himself, and eight of them have remained in custody.
In Turkey, this assassination was compared to that of Saudi journalist Jamal Hashukaji, even though he himself was assassinated inside his country's consulate in Istanbul.
A US source estimated that Iran's intelligence ministry was directly involved in the assassination of Mulwai.
Last week, an Iranian diplomat stationed in Vienna was sent to 20 years in prison in Belgium after being convicted of planning an attack against a conference of the Iranian opposition in the Paris area.
He is the first Iranian official convicted of terrorism in Europe since the Islamic Revolution.
Tehran has denied the charges against him, saying his diplomatic immunity has been violated.
