The representative of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for Venezuela, Paolo Balladelli, reported this Thursday on Twitter that the teams of the questioned president of Venezuela, Nicolás Maduro, and the opposition leader Juan Guaidó will meet to agree how to dispose of vaccines against covid-19 through the Covax mechanism.

Baladelli stressed that the installation of the so-called National Table for Access to the COVAX Strategy has "the will of the political, technical and academic actors of Venezuela."

He also stated that PAHO and UNICEF Venezuela accompany these efforts.

Guaidó assured in his social networks that the interest in attending the pandemic in the midst of a humanitarian crisis is "genuine."

In this sense, he ratified his willingness to channel "the resources to make that happen."

On February 3, Guaidó promised to manage the necessary licenses to dispose of the funds that Venezuela has frozen abroad.

The United States keeps Venezuelan assets and resources blocked after imposing sanctions on the state-owned Petróleos de Venezuela, which provides a large part of the income managed by the State, and restricting access to debt and the US stock market.

Washington has justified this decision because it accuses the Chavista regime of violating human rights and undermining democracy.

An 'agreed vaccination program' is necessary in Venezuela, says epidemiologist

For his part, epidemiologist Julio Castro, health adviser to the National Assembly elected in 2015, stressed that "a consensual vaccination program" is necessary that not only includes political actors, PAHO and Unicef, but also medical societies. and academies.

Miguel Pizarro, commissioner for the United Nations appointed by Juan Guaidó, affirmed that the intention is to guarantee access to the vaccine against covid-19 "under humanitarian principles."

In Tuesday's session of the Delegate Commission, the body with which Guaidó tries to give legal floor to the continuity of his management after ignoring the parliamentary elections of last December 6, Pizarro had indicated that they were willing to seek and procure the necessary resources so that Venezuela has access to 12 million vaccines, in reference to the management before the United States and the countries of the European Union that have sanctioned the questioned Maduro government.

CNN contacted the Ministry of Communication seeking comment on this issue, but has not received a response.

Maduro argues that they have not been able to cancel the outstanding debt with PAHO or acquire the vaccines due to the sanctions.

Last Tuesday, Maduro announced the arrival of 100,000 doses of the Russian Sputnik V vaccine to the country.

So far, Venezuela has only participated in the Russian vaccine trial.
