Paris: why the République metro station is likely to saturate in 2023

2021-02-11T11:10:21.120Z

The extension of line 11 to Rosny-sous-Bois will bring an additional flow of travelers to one of the network's largest hubs… But s

Passenger traffic jams in sight for the République station!

By 2023, the arrival of new users from Rosny-sous-Bois (Seine-Saint-Denis) on line 11 may pose a problem in the connecting corridors.

At peak times, forecasts are based on 30% attendance.

Sufficient to saturate at least three already very busy lanes today ... As a result, some passengers could find themselves stranded on the platforms, unable to access the lanes.

Subways arriving at the station will have to slow down, causing delays on the line and the inability to meet the required interval at peak times between two trains.

An amendment tabled for the construction of a new transfer tunnel

“I've been warning for years and they haven't done anything,” sighs Jacques Baudrier, elected PCF and administrator of Ile-de-France Mobilités (IDFM).

To limit the phenomenon, he filed, with Pierre Garzon Fabien Guillaud-Bataille, an amendment to ask the board of directors of this Thursday morning, the financial and urgent support of a new connection tunnel.

This solution would reduce the tension in the corridors.

But it comes at a cost: 60 million euros.

"It is absolutely necessary to enter the credits in the IDFM-RATP contract as well as in the State-Region Planning Contract so that the total saturation of the République metro station lasts only five years, from 2024 to 2029, and not yet years of more, ”continues Jacques Baudrier.

For the elected Communist, it would also be an opportunity to merge lines 3bis-7bis.

An idea that he has been defending for a long time to offer an "interesting alternative to reach the center of Paris to many users of the 19th and 20th arrondissements who use line 11".

Especially since this merger will soon be possible thanks to the arrival of new metros around 2024, on these lines, which are now compatible with each other.

RATP recognizes the problem, IDFM puts into perspective

IDFM and RATP, for their part, say they are fully aware of the problem: “On the occasion of the launch of the Republique station renovation project, carried out by RATP at the request of IDFM, details RATP, new passenger surveys and counts were carried out to have an updated and precise view of flows, particularly connecting flows.

They highlighted a phenomenon of long-term saturation (horizon 2035) of platform line 11 towards Châtelet if nothing was done by then.

"

IDFM however puts into perspective the impact of line 11, explaining that “République sees 5 metro lines (3-5-8-9-11) pass by and that the increase in flows in this large connection station cannot be attributed to line 11 only and its extension to Rosny-Bois Perrier ”.

The organizing authority for transport in Ile-de-France nevertheless assures us that “the adaptation studies of the existing stations (ASE) of line 11, including République, approved by IDFM in December 2014, had taken all measures to guarantee compliance with evacuation standards ”.

The RATP abounds, assuring that "the design studies of the project are in progress".

However, one subject remains to be discussed: that of financing.

Because "the investments will relate to both renovation and capacity investments", details IDFM.

But according to her, "The work being partly due to the impact of water infiltration following the redevelopment of the Place de la République by the City of Paris, it will be called upon to finance part of it".

The question of Porte des Lilas station

The saturation of the République station is not the only point discussed this Thursday morning.

The representative of users on the Board, Bernard Gobitz of the National Federation of Users also points to the "dilapidated" situation of the Porte des Lilas.

And calls for his immediate rehabilitation.

Despite its advanced state of disrepair, the Porte des Lilas station will not be renovated until at least 2024. DR

But we will have to wait several more years.

The RATP does not foresee any improvement before at least 2024. "This horizon is justified by preliminary work to be carried out on the whole of the existing and future line".

According to the management, “the particular configuration of the Porte des Lilas station (three tracks, two platforms including a central platform, train parking positions, driving attachment, local switching station, etc.) does not allow everything to be done at the same time. without significantly impacting the service offer.

It was therefore decided to renovate the station once the line was extended to Rosny-sous-Bois to ensure quality service to travelers ”.
