Research: A single dose of Pfizer vaccine provides protection for recovering corona

A researcher from Bar-Ilan University proved for the first time that a single dose of the vaccine given in Israel provokes a strong immune response in those who have previously contracted the virus and recovered.

The study examined the awakening of the immune system, regardless of the amount of antibodies in the body.

A new study conducted by Prof. Michael Edelstein, an epidemiologist from the Faculty of Medicine of Bar-Ilan University in the Galilee, found that one dose of Pfizer vaccine from the Pfizer company is enough to elicit a strong immune response among recovering patients.

The results are encouraging, but the Ministry of Health treats them with caution.

The ministry has decided not to vaccinate recoverers from corona and clearly prioritize giving vaccines to those who have not yet been infected.

The study examined how a single dose of Pfizer vaccine against corona affects recoverers from the virus.

The study was conducted at Ziv Hospital in Safed and was published this evening (Thursday) in the medical journal Eurosurveillance.

The participants in the study are workers at Ziv Medical Center.

The immune system functioned significantly.

The study was conducted among a group of 514 medical staff members between the ages of 77-19.

This is a mixed group of Jews, Druze and Arabs, whose antibody levels after the first vaccination were measured for 21 days.

17 of them were diagnosed as positive for corona in the past, about a month to ten months before receiving the first vaccine dose.

The antibody level of all group members was tested before the vaccine, and then found that those 17 who had previously been in Corona responded well to the vaccine.

The immune system has functioned significantly and uniformly in all those who have been infected in the past.

Following the results of the study, Prof. Edelstein explained that "this is a useful finding for decision makers who can make a decision whether to vaccinate the recovering from the corona, and with some vaccines."

"It does not mean that they have lost protection after infection, but the strong response to only one vaccine is certainly encouraging. We will have to attack it on a larger group of people."

Maccabi: The vaccine is 93% effective for recipients of both doses

At the same time, data from the Information and Digital Health Division at Maccabi HMO show that the effectiveness of the vaccine in Israel, for recipients of the two doses, now stands at 93%.

According to the HMOs, as of this stage less than 0.1% of recipients of the second vaccine dose have been in Corona.

As of last day, only 544 people had been infected in Corona out of about 523,000 vaccinated, which had passed more than a week since they received the second dose of vaccine.

Maccabi reported that from a test conducted among those infected, the vast majority of them suffer from only mild symptoms or experience no symptoms at all.

Of those infected, only 15 patients needed hospitalization, of whom four are defined as in severe condition, three in moderate condition and eight in mild condition.

Less than 3% are verified vaccinated.

The head of the health division at Maccabi, Dr. Miri Mizrahi-Reuveni, said that "the data unequivocally prove that the vaccine is very effective, and we have no doubt that it has saved the lives of many Israelis.

"Because there is an active morbidity among children and adolescents up to the age of 16 that cannot be vaccinated, and that the mutations of the virus are much more contagious, it means that those who do not get vaccinated will be infected, sooner or later."
