The 5-Star Movement militancy supports a Draghi government

2021-02-11T19:04:26.993Z

The former president of the ECB can now present his list of ministers and form an Executive with the almost unanimous support of the Italian parties

The bases of the 5-Star Movement (M5S) have voted this Thursday mostly in favor of approving the formation of a Government with Mario Draghi at the helm.

The decision, made by a number of people whose identity is known only to the owner of the platform through which they vote, definitively paves the way for the former president of the ECB to the Chigi palace.

The next few days will certify the end of a long process and the birth of the Draghi Government.

The vote, in which 74,537 people have participated, has forced Draghi to delay the communication of his future Executive to the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella.

If the M5S had refused to enter the Executive, it would have been a major problem to get out of the crisis in which Italy has been involved for more than two months.

The yes has won with 59.3% of the votes compared to 40.7% of rejection.

"It is a great test of maturity," said Luigi Di Maio, Foreign Minister and former leader of the movement.

The result, much tighter than on other occasions, clearly shows the prevailing division in the ranks of the

.

A large part of the leadership and the militants consider it a betrayal of their anti-system origins that the formation of a government with who was the most important banker in Europe be blessed.

A fracture that could lead to the splitting of a large group of parliamentarians in the coming weeks.

The M5S decision is the last stage before the formation of the Government.

Draghi has won the support of all parties, except Brothers of Italy, the far-right party of Giorgia Meloni (he could finally abstain).

The former banker must now present to the head of state the list of ministers he has designed.

Mattarella will have to ratify it and proceed to take possession in the Quirinal Palace.

A process that could be liquidated this weekend and open the way to the investiture in both Houses next Monday.

The unknown to be resolved is the profile that the new Executive will have.

The parties believe that Draghi will satisfy them with one or two portfolios depending on the specific weight of each one.

The rest, the names reserved for the weight ministries and related to finance and the economy, should be technical profiles.

Nobody knows.

The former banker has left this Thursday to his home in Umbria and on Friday morning he is scheduled to visit Mattarella to finish clearing the last unknowns.
