The medical record of the 84-year-old Italian politician Silvio Berlusconi has a new entry: The former Italian Prime Minister had to spend the night in hospital after a fall.

This was announced by a spokesman.

Berlusconi stumbled in his residence in Rome and suffered several bruises, according to his Forza Italia party.

After the accident, he was taken to his hometown of Milan to be examined in the hospital.

"He was released this morning and is at home working to take part in remote European Parliament votes," the spokesman said.

Berlusconi, who has been in public as a businessman and politician since the 1980s, has been a member of the EU Parliament since 2019.

He traveled to Rome on Tuesday to meet the former head of the European Central Bank, Mario Draghi, and offer him support in forming a government with his Forza Italia.

Berlusconi recently struggled with a number of health problems.

In spring 2019, Berlusconi was operated on for an intestinal obstruction in the San Raffaele clinic in Milan.

In September 2020, he had to be treated for pneumonia caused by the coronavirus.

And in January 2021 he had heart problems - he was temporarily treated in a hospital in Monaco.
