Netanyahu decided to appoint Ben Shabbat in charge of the issue despite pressure from the head of the Mossad, Yossi Cohen, who wanted to accept the position.
Cohen claimed in closed-door talks that he could persuade the Americans not to return to the nuclear deal and even ran an aggressive media campaign in an attempt to position himself as responsible for the Iranian issue.
However, Netanyahu finally decided to give the job to Ben Shabbat.
As part of his role, Ben Shabbat is also expected to convene in the coming days an inter-ministerial team that will formulate the Israeli strategy for talks with the United States and the other powers on the Iranian nuclear issue.
The Prime Minister will hold a policy discussion on the Iranian issue next week or next week, along with Defense Minister Bnei Gantz, Foreign Minister Gabi Ashkenazi and the heads of the defense establishment.
