The coronavirus continues to generate questions in our audience.

In this episode, Dr. Elmer Huerta answers the doubts of our users about the contagion of covid-19, about vaccines and about whether we can replace the alcohol gel with, for example, cologne or perfume.

You can listen to this episode on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or your favorite podcast platform, or read the transcript below.

Hello, I am Dr. Elmer Huerta and this is your daily dose of information on the new coronavirus.

Information that we hope will be useful to take care of your health and that of your family.

Today we will answer some questions that we have been asked on our Twitter account @DrHuerta.

Questions about how to prevent the spread of coronavirus

@drhuerta hello dr, I have some doubts about prevention against covid19.

If the hair touches an object with covid, should it be washed? Can the cologne replace the alcohol? When you wash your hands, does the water used contain the virus?

- ⌜ANGELINE⌟ (@AngelineWorld) February 9, 2021

Hi Angeline.

Of course, if the hair has been contaminated with any type of mucous secretions, it must be washed immediately.

On the other hand, to be effective, an alcohol disinfectant must have a concentration of at least 60%.

In this sense, some perfumes and colognes that have alcohol at a concentration of 70%, when there is no water, soap or alcohol gel, could be used in exceptional situations.

Finally, the water used to wash your hands contains foam, which carries away the grease and dirt that the virus contains, which is deactivated by the detergents in the soap.

@drhuerta is it necessary to disinfect each package or container of food that one buys in stores such as Walmart or other supermarkets?

Whether they are food or some other object or other merchandise?

Is it necessary to disinfect coins and bills?

- Aarón Pérez (@ aaronpj16) February 11, 2021

Good question, Aaron.

While it is true that the new coronavirus can be transmitted by contaminated surfaces, a recent review of the subject, published on January 29 in the journal

Nature

, has found that by far the main route of contagion is respiratory through aerosols.

So unless the packages are obviously contaminated with secretions, washing hands with soap and water after handling the packages would be the top recommendation.

@drhuerta how to disinfect a room that was used as isolation for an infected person

- CÉSAR RIOS (@Neocriosc) February 11, 2021

Hello, César, as we answered previously, surface contamination may be able to transmit the new coronavirus, but its incidence - compared to respiratory contagion - is much lower.

Ventilating the room for 24 hours and cleaning the surfaces with a solution of a spoon of bleach diluted in a liter of water should be sufficient.

Obviously, washing bedding is important.

Dr. Huerta, how safe is it to go out to the patio of my house without a mask when it is attached to my neighbor's, separated by a 6 foot high plastic fence.

They don't wear masks to go out on the patio either.

- juan f castro (@jfcastroe) February 9, 2021

Hello John.

While it is true that anything is possible, it seems to us that it is highly unlikely that contagion could occur in the situation you describe.

Both are outdoors and separated by more than 2 meters apart.

Questions about the coronavirus vaccine

@drhuerta Hello Dr. Huerta.

Can I get vaccinated against the coronavirus if I have atopic dematitis?

- Michael (@kavaiopr) February 11, 2021

Hello Michael.

Knowing that atopic dermatitis is a type of allergy that is expressed on the skin, I think it would be possible for you to get vaccinated.

However, please speak with your doctor, who knows exactly how severe your allergy is.

Yes ... The nurse who vaccinated without gloves ...

- Roberto López (@ FELMAC36) February 10, 2021

Very good question, Roberto.

According to the World Health Organization, it is not essential to wear gloves when giving subcutaneous or intramuscular injections.

What is very important is that vaccinators disinfect their hands before vaccinating each person.

Wearing a single pair of gloves for several hours is also not advisable, as these can be a major vehicle for contamination.

Doctor good evening, my name is edilberto and I have chronic rhinitis and pharyngitis, and I would like to know if I can receive the vaccine against COVID-19

Dede, I thank you for your answer.

- Edilberto Linares Ca (@ linares020282) February 10, 2021

Hello, Edilberto.

None of the conditions you refer to is a contraindication to receiving the vaccine.

Anyway, I beg you to consult your doctor.

@drhuerta ask you the following, my wife works in Minsa and is ready to be vaccinated, but she receives chemotherapy for cancer, can she get vaccinated?

I appreciate your reply

- Jose Luis Quintasi V (@Josequintasi) February 10, 2021

Hi José, this is an excellent question.

According to the American Society for Clinical Oncology, cancer patients who are receiving chemotherapy can receive their vaccine.

One strategy that can be applied, according to the organization, is to get the vaccine on days off from chemotherapy.

@drhuerta Good morning, Dr. Huerta.

Can you tell me which vaccines against SARS-CoV-2 should be administered in one dose and which in 2?

- Adrián González (@AdrianGonzR) February 9, 2021

Excellent question Adrián.

Of the vaccines under study, almost all require two doses, except those developed by Johnson & Johnson and Cansino, which only need one.

@drhuerta Doc good evening I have 2 questions that so far I do not see the answers on TV:

1. Can a person who currently has COVID receive the vaccine?

And therefore would he recover satisfactorily?

2. How long will the vaccine received protect me from Covid? (1 year?)

- Simon's Opinion (@Simon_Opina) February 9, 2021

Hello, Simon, according to the CDC, people who have had COVID-19 can get vaccinated at any time after they have overcome the disease.

Regarding the protection time of the vaccine, this is being studied.

Remember that vaccines have hardly been used since August 2020, just over six months at the time of writing this episode.

We will have to wait at least a year to answer your question.

Query: the #Sinopharm vaccine requires 2 doses, which are also 2 doses? Can I get vaccinated with 2 different vaccines?

for example #PfizerVaccine and Sinopharm?

@rburhum @drhuerta @Minsa_Peru https://t.co/621JXRb52E

- Erase Browser History (@dfriasd) February 11, 2021

Hello, because they are different technology platforms, what would happen if different vaccines are combined has not been studied.

Common sense tells us that it would not be advisable.

Other questions about the coronavirus

@drhuerta the sars cov2 causes cumulative damage to the body with each reinfection, that is, if pulmonary fibrosis was generated, to cite an example, the next infection will be more dangerous for the patient?

- tezumak 5 (@tezumakl) February 9, 2021

Hello, Tezumak, we don't know.

There is still no clinical data that has studied enough people who have had a reinfection to answer your question.
