The prosecution in the ousted trial of former US President Donald Trump ended tonight (Friday) presenting the arguments for his conviction in incitement to storm the Capitol on January 6th.

On the third day of the Senate trial, the prosecution team recalled Trump's inflammatory speeches from recent years and showed videos in which the rioters say they acted on his instructions.

"We want to convict President Trump of a crime he is obviously guilty of, because if you do not do it, if we pretend it all did not happen, or worse - if there is no response, who promises it will not happen again?" Joe Ngusa, part of the Democratic prosecution team.

Trump's trial continued tonight after the Senate ruled it constitutional.

56 senators voted in favor, including six Republican senators, and 44 voted against.

Disruptions occurred on the day Congress convened to ratify Joe Biden's electoral victory in the presidential election, amid Trump's unfounded allegations of forgery.

Lawmakers in the building were rushed to hiding places, and the incident ended with five dead, including one police officer.

Democratic prosecutors have argued that there is a direct link between Trump's inflammatory statements over the past few years and the riots in Washington, noting their prominence.

Among other things, they mentioned that after the 2017 white supremacy rally in Charlottesville condemned "both sides", they showed a video in which he told his supporters to beat a protester against him, and another video of him says after his supporters beat a protester in a rally that the act "was in place, from this".

Subsequently, videos of rioters in the Capitol showed that they came in the wake of the former president's remarks.

"We got an invitation to come," one of them said.

"Trump sent us," another clarified, "he will be pleased. We are fighting for Trump."

Diana DeGit, a member of the Democratic prosecution team, said Trump supporters "really believed the hack was on Trump's instructions. The president told them to get there."
