For lack of sufficient Republican votes, the ex-president was acquitted on Saturday after his trial in the Senate. If he can congratulate himself on ga

At the end of a one-week trial, American senators ended, unsurprisingly, by acquitting Donald Trump on Saturday evening.

The ex-president was indicted by the House of Representatives for "inciting insurrection" during the assault on the Capitol on January 6.

To condemn him, two-thirds of the votes in the Senate were needed: at least 17 Republican senators would have had to join their Democratic colleagues.

Only seven did.

Mitch McConnell, leader of the Republicans in the Senate, had said the same morning that he would vote for acquittal.

No matter the overwhelming evidence, shocking videos and supporting tweets, put forward by the Democrats during these few days, no matter how good the lawyers: it was clear that most Republicans would stand in solidarity with Donald Trump.

This is proof that the billionaire, although exiled in Florida, without access to Twitter or Facebook, remains the undisputed leader of his party.

Elected officials, many of whom will stand for re-election in two or four years, cannot afford to challenge him or face the threat of a rival imposed in the primaries.

The electoral base remains loyal to the boss anyway.

Legal troubles lie in wait for the former president

With this trial, the Democrats hoped, if convicted, to make Donald Trump ineligible after a second vote.

It will not be.

He can now be a candidate in 2024, although he has not yet made any official announcement to this effect.

However, he will remain the only president in the history of the United States to be struck twice by an "impeachment".

In addition to this political component now closed, other troubles, judicial this time, lie in wait for the former president.

In Georgia, a state won by Democrat Joe Biden, an investigation has been opened to find out whether the Trump camp tried to overturn the results of the presidential election.

In a phone call the content of which has been publicly unveiled, Donald Trump can be heard asking the Georgia Secretary of State, in charge of the elections, to "find" the votes necessary for his victory.

The expenses related to his inauguration in January 2017 are also the subject of three different surveys.

In New York, it is the personal affairs of the real estate mogul that are targeted.

The attorney general of that state has launched an investigation into the finances of the Trump Organization.

Donald Trump is also the subject of a libel suit against journalist E. Jean Carroll, who accused her of rape in 2019 before being called a liar by the president.
