Chile began vaccination against covid-19 on Christmas Eve, the same day as Mexico and Costa Rica, and just a few days before Argentina.

Less than two months later, the figures show without reservation that it is the leader of Latin America and that, in addition, it is positioned well above the average for vaccination worldwide.

See below what are the results obtained so far and where your country is in comparison.

Chile has about 19 million inhabitants.

As of Friday, February 12, more than 1.6 million had received at least one dose of the coronavirus vaccine, according to the Ministry of Public Health.

Days ago the mass vaccination process began, and the government's goal is to inoculate about 5 million in the first quarter and reach 15 by the end of the first semester.

Chile's results compared to Mexico, Argentina and the rest of the region

How can these figures be compared with the results for the rest of Latin America?

The

Our World in Data

portal

, from the University of Oxford, shows the evolution of vaccination in each country.

In the graph below, you can see the number of injections that were administered in the region per 100 inhabitants.

In cumulative figures up to February 11, Chile leads with more than 8 doses per 100 people and Brazil follows, by far, with just over 2 doses per 100 people.

The third, fourth and fifth places are held by Costa Rica, Argentina and Mexico respectively.

See all the results here:

In December, inoculations began with the vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech.

The mass vaccination that has been underway since February 3, on the other hand, began after the arrival of doses of the Chinese vaccine from Sinovac (which is, by the way, the one that President Sebastián Piñera received on February 12) .

The Government affirms that in the first quarter it will receive in total more than 10 million of this vaccine.

Based on the vaccination plan, each day new segments of the population are authorized to receive the injection, which is free "for all groups defined as priority," according to the Ministry of Health.

The vaccine is also voluntary.

In this sense, before the inoculations began, the authorities had stated that for some groups it had to be mandatory.

However, according to the current plan, each person decides whether or not they want to receive the puncture.

Chile has accumulated more than 768,000 cases of coronavirus to date, according to Johns Hopkins University.

If it is ranked number 24 worldwide.

Vaccination in Chile compared to the world

The rate of doses administered per 100 people in Chile is more than four times the rate worldwide, as can be seen below.

If the progress of the Latin American country is compared in comparison with different continents and regions of the world, the results are also revealing.

Chile is ahead of North America, which as a region is the one that leads ahead of Europe.

It is followed, in descending order, by South America, Asia and Africa.

A look at vaccination against covid-19 in the world

To have the most general vision of vaccination at a global level, you can see in this map below where each country is.

According to the division made by

Our World in Data

based on the data available on vaccination campaigns, Chile is, along with numerous European countries and Canada, among others, in the segment of nations that have administered between 3 and 10 doses per 100 inhabitants.

Argentina and Brazil, for example, are in the segment that administered between 1 and 3 injections per 100 people.

Mexico, for its part, among those that inoculated less than 1 in 100.

To close, we show you here the results of Chile, Mexico and Argentina in comparison with some of the countries that have vaccinated the most so far, taking the reference of doses administered per 100 inhabitants.

Among them are Israel, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom and the United States.

Israel, by the way, has been taken as an example worldwide.

At present, all those over 16 years of age can already be vaccinated.

We tell you here what the country's strategy was.

The United States, for its part, began vaccination in pharmacies and supermarkets on Friday.

Clarification: this note has updated data up to February 12 from the Chilean Ministry of Health and Johns Hopkins University, as well as data up to February 11 from Our World in Data.
