Austria's Chancellor is proud of his course in the fight against the pandemic. But criticism of Sebastian Kurz is growing, even in his own party.

Prime Minister Kurz: The harmony is over

The photo is not yet a year old.

It shows Sebastian Kurz on a visit to Innsbruck, seven days before the first corona case in Austria becomes known in the city.

In a friendly circle, the head of government is smiling with friends of the Tyrolean party: Governor Günther Platter as well as the heads of the Chamber of Commerce and the party's own economic association.

Three lockdowns later, the harmony is over.

At the beginning of the week, the representatives of the Tyrolean tourism region forced a test of strength on the Chancellor, which in the end he only barely passed: Against verbose resistance, Kurz issued a travel warning and a ten-day quasi-quarantine over large parts of Tyrol.

The reason: nowhere in Europe is the virus mutant B.1.351 discovered in South Africa raging as massively as between the Brenner Pass and Kitzbühel.

Along the 719 kilometer long external border of Tyrol - an unprecedented step - the armed forces and police have been ensuring that nobody leaves without a negative Corona test.

Only East Tyrol is spared from the regulation.
