Former US President Donald Trump welcomed the US Senate's acquittal in impeachment proceedings against him - and immediately went on the offensive.

His political movement is only just beginning, Trump said in a statement on the judgment.

He was looking forward to the “incredible journey together to achieve American greatness for all of our people.

(...) Our historical, patriotic and beautiful movement to make America great again has only just begun. "

Trump thanked the Republican senators for acquittal.

The Democrats tried to undermine the rule of law, he said.

The impeachment process was another part of the "greatest witch hunt in the history of the country."

Trump had repeatedly referred to allegations against him in the past as a "witch hunt".

The prosecutors had accused the ex-president of "inciting a riot" in the case of the Capitol Tower earlier this year.

It was the second impeachment proceedings against Trump within a year - the first trial in the Ukraine affair had also ended in an acquittal.
