The ceremony was held to mark the 200th anniversary of Napoleon's death.

The remains were discovered in excavations by French and Russian archaeologists in 2019 led by Pierre Malinowski, head of the Foundation for the Development of Historical Initiatives of France and Russia, linked to the Kremlin.

"This is a sign of reconciliation," he said before the ceremony.

The three women buried were apparently part of the array that provided assistance to the French army, while the three boys were apparently drummers.

Initially, it was thought that the tomb, which was located during construction work, dates from World War II, but Russian researchers later discovered that these were remnants of the 1812 war and that most of them were in their 30s.

All, it is estimated, were killed in the Battle of Vyazma on November 3 of that year, with the beginning of the withdrawal of the French army from Moscow.

The ceremony was a rare moment of unity between Russia and Europe, at a time of tension between the parties due to the repression of the opposition in Russia and the imprisonment of Alexei Navalny.
