A pizza fire triggers a large-scale operation: 65 men move out - and wake 23-year-olds from deep sleep

Josef Keller, commander of the Grainauer Wehr, cannot say whether this or the activated smoke alarm has startled passers-by.

The quick emergency call, he is certain, “prevented worse things”.

The resident of the ground floor apartment, a 23-year-old from Zugspitzdorf, hadn't noticed anything.

The rescuers who advanced on him with compressed air breathers found him soundly asleep in his bed.

After initial treatment by the Bavarian Red Cross, who were on site like the Garmisch-Partenkirchen police, he was taken to the Garmisch-Partenkirchen Clinic for further examination.

Fortunately, he was able to leave it around noon.

The fire brigade also completed the operation very quickly.

The Garmisch, with 25 men and three vehicles, were allowed to leave without having achieved anything.

Your Grainau colleagues, who had advanced with five cars and 40 men, had half an hour to do.

"We checked and ventilated the whole apartment," explains Keller the procedure.

For him, the whole thing showed above all how useful smoke alarms are.
