The year 2020 was marked by a historic decline in democracy.

according to their democratic character.

The conclusion is clear.

Out of 167 states, the planet has in 2020 only 23 full democracies, which represent 8.4% of the world population, and freedoms are declining on all continents.

Authoritarian or hybrid regimes are largely in the majority and rule over half of humanity.

Several factors explain this democratic decline.

First of all, the push for the Chinese total-capitalist model, which is increasingly being emulated in the emerging world.

The proliferation of strong men backing their power to a democracy, from Putin's Russia to Erdogan's Turkey via Mohammed Ben Salman's Saudi Arabia.

The endless wars devastating Afghanistan, the Middle East, Libya and the Sahel, and again Ethiopia.
