One thousand doses purchased: the drug that will prevent the deterioration of the corona to a serious illness

The drug is intended for dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients and cancer patients who are infected and in a mild-moderate condition, and in the second phase of the trial it reduced the development of a serious disease by 70%.

The two major funds are working to make the drug accessible to policyholders, but the health system is not sure that it will ease the burden on hospitals.

The Ministry of Health has purchased 1,000 doses of emergency medicine, designed to prevent the disease of those diagnosed in a risk group from degenerating into a state of serious illness.

The period, which deals with the antibody "Bamlanivimab", received an emergency permit from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and was registered in an emergency registry in Israel.

400 doses of the drug arrived in Israel about a month ago, on January 13, and the treatment is available in 20 hospitals, and is given in emergency medical centers of medical institutions, to patients who have been identified in the emergency room and are not yet hospitalized, and can be treated and released home.

The treatment can be given until the tenth day after the onset of symptoms, with the best option being to give it within three days - since during this period the patient is highly contagious and is in isolation at home.

NEWS It was learned that the two major funds, Maccabi and Clalit, are working to make the treatment accessible to their patients through the hospitals, while identifying patients with appropriate risk factors in advance.

For this purpose, Clalit Health Fund will give the medicine to its insured in one of the eight hospitals in Clalit, and Maccabi HMO in summary proceedings with Hadassah Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, to provide its members with treatment at the Jerusalem institution.

The geriatric treatment system is also currently being prepared for the introduction of treatment.

The study on the drug received good results in the second phase of the trial among at-risk patients, with a reduction of more than 70% in the development of severe disease and a reduction to almost 0% mortality.

The Ministry of Health recommends that the treatment be given especially to dialysis patients, organ transplant recipients, and oncology and meta-oncology patients in active care.

In Germany and the United States, millions of doses of the drug have been purchased, but senior health officials are pinning their hopes on vaccines, arguing that the drug will not dramatically ease hospital congestion for two reasons: firstly, it is a relatively small segment of the population. Once, and requires another stay in place for three hours.

Such measures are only available in hospitals, so patients will continue to get there.

On the other hand, preventing serious illness for patients in risk groups, with the help of half-day hospitalization, may in the long run relieve the burden, because these patients usually come for treatment on a respirator.

Baruch Lieberman, CEO of Friends of Medicine, believes the drug will significantly help alleviate the morbidity burden. “I call on HMOs and hospitals to adopt antibody treatment and save the lives of hundreds of patients at risk.

"Every person at risk should receive a referral from his family doctor for treatment at the hospital," Lieberman said. "If the hospitals cooperate, within three weeks I estimate we can see a very significant change in reducing mortality and hospitalizations."
