In images from immigration surveillance cameras, the man, Andrei Kovalenko, is seen slipping out of an office in the Denpasar detention center where officials were to validate documents for his transfer, and run to the outside.

"

We are continuing to investigate this case and we have deployed all our resources

" to find him, Djuhandani Rahardjo Puro, head of the island's criminal police, told a press conference.

Balinese police confirmed the Russian, who also uses Andrew Ayer's name, was wanted by Interpol, but did not say on what grounds.

The Russian embassy in Indonesia, contacted by AFP, declined to comment.

The 32-year-old Russian was arrested in 2019 in a cafe in Kuta, the tourist area of the island, for selling hashish to tourists.

He was sentenced to one and a half years in prison by the Indonesian courts.

Andrei Kovalenko was released on February 3 from Kerobokan prison and was handed over to the immigration services with a view to his extradition.

The man managed to escape after being visited by a Russian friend, identified as Ekaterina Troubkina, who is also wanted for her role in the escape, police said.

Indonesian police previously captured fugitives wanted by Interpol who were hiding on the tropical island.

In July 2020, Bali police arrested Marcus Beam, an American fugitive accused of extorting some $ 500,000 from women he met on the internet between 2015 and 2019. The American hid with his partner in Bali where he was filming pornographic videos and sold them.
