The Italians say "Del Gioconda", since it would be the portrait of Lisa Gherardini, wife of Francesco del Giocondo, a Florentine fabric merchant.
Its original title is
Monna Lisa
, a contraction of "madonna Lisa", widely used by the Anglo-Saxons, who often write it, by deformation, with a single n.
But for the curators of the Louvre, the name of this painting painted by Leonardo da Vinci, five hundred years ago, is INV 779. This inventory number, apparently a little barbaric, sounds like a treat for historians because it documents its provenance and its history.
In this case, it indicates that the Italian masterpiece was recorded during the general inventory of the imperial museums of 1854.
