A death in the freezing cold and indifference.

A 51-year-old homeless man was found dead in his makeshift tent, in the center of Paris, rue de Turbigo (Ier), in the Etienne-Marcel district, opposite the tunnel under the Forum des Halles which leads to Châtelet.

The macabre discovery took place Sunday evening, at 7 p.m., at No. 7 of the street.

It was other homeless people, comrades of the victim, who also live in tents in this central district of the capital, who called on the police.

Still unclear circumstances

The police from the center police station discovered the victim lying in his tent.

“The skeletal-looking body, noted a police source, was in an advanced state of decomposition.

At the request of the public prosecutor, the body of the victim was transported to the Forensic Institute.

An autopsy has been requested.

Did the victim freeze to death?

Of illness?

Of an injury, consequences of a fight?

"The circumstances of the death remain unknown," said a police officer.

The investigation, entrusted to the police station of the center, continues.

The police are trying to identify the victim, who is known to be a man, born in Morocco, in 1970.

"How sad this death and what absurdity"

"I asked for additional information," said Ariel Weil, the mayor (PS) of Paris center.

What sadness this death and what absurdity, when the extreme cold plan was triggered and there were places of accommodation for the victim at the town hall of the 4th century and at the Carreau du Temple (3rd).

"

The street deaths collective, which tirelessly records the deaths of homeless people every year, in 2019, counted 531 victims, including 145 for the capital.

Since the start of the year, across France, more than 65 people have died in the streets.
