The Supreme Court today (Monday) issued a conditional order reserved for the Minister of Internal Security, Amir Ohana, to explain why the criteria for obtaining a firearms license will not be determined in regulations.

At present, the criteria are set only by the Minister, while regulations will also need to be approved by the Knesset committee.

In addition, the Minister is required to explain the policy that allows security guards to carry weapons home, which, according to the petitioners, leads to increased violence against women and encourages the murder of women and men.

As part of the petition, filed by a coalition of organizations called "The Gun on the Kitchen Table," a confrontation erupted between Minister Ohana and Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit.

While the latter believes that the criteria for obtaining a weapon should indeed be determined in the regulations, Ohana disagreed with this and argued that they should continue to be determined under the guidance of the Minister.

As part of the argument, Ohana asked to be represented privately, but Mandelblit refused.

Ohana then himself submitted a notice to the court - however the judges refused to accept the contention that a minister could not decide on his own not to be represented by the ombudsman, and needed his approval.

A petition was heard in the Supreme Court yesterday, following which the order was issued today.

Advocate Ann Soccio, from the Association for Civil Rights, who represents the petitioners together with Adv. Neta Levy from "Itach-Maaki", said that "we have taken an important step towards a reality in which weapons will no longer be taken home. Firearms in homes are a danger to women "The children and the security guards themselves. The painful data show an increase in murders and suicides with licensed weapons, and a terrorist atmosphere in many homes where there are weapons. The court reminded the government that as early as 2016, the Knesset ruled that weapons would not be taken home."
