"You have to reduce land consumption, for social reasons and for reasons of climate protection," said Bernd Riexinger to the editorial network in Germany.

"That is why we cannot continue with the single-family houses as before." Instead, plots of land have to be built on in such a way that more apartments are created, "above all more affordable apartments," said Riexinger.

In cities there is a "gigantic housing shortage", in other regions the value of houses is "plummeting".

The Thuringian CDU state chairman Christian Hirte accused Hofreiter of a "disturbed relationship to property and the reality of life in rural areas."

The president of the Haus & Grund owners' association, Kai Warnecke, spoke of “pure ideology”.

The Greens had rejected allegations at the weekend that they wanted to ban the construction of single-family homes across the board.

"The claims are wrong," said a parliamentary group spokesman for the news agency dpa.

»Our own four walls are important for many people - this includes a single family home.
