Biden: We will not remove sanctions on Iran until you stop enriching uranium (from Twitter)

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said tonight (Tuesday) that "the way to diplomacy is open" with Iran, regarding the powers' nuclear agreement with it in 2015, but declined to say whether the Biden administration was directly involved with Iranian elements.

"The road to diplomacy is open at the moment. Iran is still far from fulfilling its part (in the agreement), so we will have to see what it does," Blinkan told US public radio.

Asked if there was any move to renew direct diplomacy with Iran, Blinken pointed to the public position of US President Joe Biden that if Iran renews the terms of the 2015 agreement, the United States will do the same.

"The president has been very clear in public, over and over again, and has made it clear where we stand. We will see what, if any, Iran's response will be," he said.

The interviewer noted that Blinken did not directly answer the question, and asked again: "But do you not rule out that direct diplomacy may be somewhere in the future?".

Blinken replied that "at some point, apparently, if there is progress on this issue, it will require diplomacy."

In 2018, former US President Donald Trump left the nuclear deal, which restricted Iran's uranium enrichment activities, with the aim of making it difficult for Tehran to develop nuclear weapons - an aspiration that Iran has long denied - in exchange for easing US and other sanctions.

When Trump left the nuclear deal that Iran had signed with six major powers, he re-imposed the crippling sanctions on Iran's economy.

In response, Tehran pushed the boundaries of the deal, enriching uranium to a level of 20% - above the 3.67% quota but below the 90% needed to develop nuclear weapons.

In addition, the Iranians expanded their low-level enriched uranium stocks, using advanced centrifuges for enrichment.

Iran has told the International Atomic Energy Agency that it will reduce cooperation with it in a week, and step up demonstrations in the Islamic Republic against US sanctions, which are still stifling its economy.
