Historically low temperatures have generated the coldest air in decades across much of the United States, reaching as far as the Rio Grande River and producing record amounts of snow and ice in the south of the country.

These are some of the records that have been broken in the United States for cold weather, as well as some of the more interesting statistics recorded due to extreme temperatures.

An extreme weather record

This Monday, there was a difference of 36 degrees in temperatures in the United States: from 32 degrees Celsius, in Florida, to 4 degrees below zero, in Wisconsin and Minnesota.

While hundreds of cities broke records for minimum temperatures, in the central US area, Miami registered a record 32.8 degrees Celsius of maximum thermal sensation, this Sunday

More than a third of the continental United States was below zero on Monday.

If you expand the measurement to areas with temperatures in the freezing point, it covers more than 79% of the country.

Wind chill advisories and advisories cover all or part of 20 states from the Canadian border to Mexico.

More than 68 million people live in that affected area.

Weather is generating the coldest air in decades in many places in the central United States:

  • Dallas dropped to -15 degrees Celsius, the coldest temperature the city has seen since 1989.

  • Oklahoma City hit 21.1 degrees below zero, the coldest temperature in the city since 1989, and the wind chill reached a record 33 degrees Celsius below zero.

  • Austin and San Antonio in Texas had single-digit temperatures (in degrees Fahrenheit) for the first time since 1989.

  • Corpus Christi, Texas, dropped to -8 degrees Celsius, the coldest since 1989.

  • Rapid City, South Dakota, has had five consecutive nights of minus 24 degrees.

    The last time this happened was in 1943.

  • Wind chill dropped to -35 degrees Celsius in Kansas City, Missouri, the lowest since 1989.

  • Monday's high temperature of -19 degrees Celsius and a low of -29.4 degrees Celsius was the coldest day in Omaha, Nebraska, in 25 years.

A blanket of snow and ice

Winter storm watches, warnings or alerts have been issued in at least 40 states, home to about 154 million people - roughly half the nation's population.

Snow fell as far south as Brownsville, in the southernmost part of Texas, where snow has been measured only twice since 1898, when statistics began to be recorded.

Lake Charles, Louisiana, which suffered two direct hits from hurricanes in the past six months, experienced snowstorms Monday morning.

Oklahoma City and Dallas saw daily snowfall (15 and 10 centimeters, respectively) that made the

top

10 in both cities.

Both could see another 10 major snowfalls on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Abilene, Texas, reported a new daily snowfall record of almost 15 inches on Sunday, breaking the previous record of 9 inches in 1996.
