Harsh criticism, resignations from the party and dissatisfaction.

The CSU base is seething.

Many are dissatisfied with the corona policy of party leader Markus Söder.

Munich

- In good years there is more to be experienced on the CSU's political Ash Wednesday than beer-diminishing uniformity.

If you listen carefully in Passau *, you will also recognize nuances, differentiations, insights into the soul of the grassroots: whistles against your own ministers, even Lower Bavarian, applause for thoughtful speeches, even cheers for pro-European passion, for example in 2020. What would be going on this time in Passau ?

It is seething in parts of the CSU - but now of all times the real rally is canceled, relocated to the Internet.

Political Ash Wednesday: In the CSU, displeasure with Söder's corona policy is growing

It would have been very exciting to have party leader Markus Söder * stand in front of the hundred percent and explain his Corona * policy.

In the CSU * there is noticeably growing grumbling about the strict course.

Even long-standing managers find it difficult to assess the mood more precisely.

How big is the proportion of the increasingly louder critics compared to the rather quiet group of those who feel well protected by Söder?

It used to be considered quite reliable to ask around in the parliamentary group.

The biggest advantage and disadvantage of the MPs is their strictly regional view: Anyone who is physically so much in the electoral district, encounters loud and quiet.

But because meetings are rarely allowed to take place, these mood sensors are omitted.

“We are missing these seismographs,” says one.

It is noticeable that there are several sources of criticism: economic politicians at all levels, which is to be expected in the face of tough lockdown resolutions;

plus a few notoriously dissatisfied.

But it is also fermenting in local politics, which is directly feeling the pressure of the citizens.

A number of mayors and district administrators from Upper Bavaria are currently dismissing Söder - often argumentatively, more rarely radicalized.

Zoff about corona policy: District administrators rebel against CSU boss Söder

The Erdingen District Administrator Martin Bayerstorfer, for example, urgently advises loosening the district level for incidences below 35. Otherwise, "more and more people would no longer be willing to go along with the course because they discover: Although the numbers are falling, nothing happens." His deputy, too CSU, calls for schools to open and publicly accuses Söder of "despising children".

Ebersberger District Administrator Robert Niedergesäß criticizes the new target of 35 and the household-plus-one contact limits.

The people are "friable", he says.

The CSU Munich calls for more relaxation.

And several district chairmen of the Junge Union, formerly close to the Söder-Jubelclub, openly spread criticism online.

Some later report that they quickly received harsh text messages from Söder's confidants.

Obviously, this no longer has a dampening effect.

Poll numbers for Söder are also falling.

“We have passed the apex,” says a long-time functionary.

The number of people leaving has increased noticeably in several circles for two months, especially in the retail sector.

Official figures so far only last until the end of 2020 and are more moderate: minus two percent to 137,010 nationwide, because previously many people joined the CSU because of Söder's course.

Corona easing: Ilse Aigner demanded opening perspectives from Söder

Ilse Aigner, the head of the Upper Bavaria CSU, speaks of a marathon at Corona *.

"On the last five kilometers the air runs out at some point, from kilometer to kilometer the emotional situation becomes more difficult." Aigner had vehemently demanded an open perspective from Söder and thus aroused his displeasure.

She now also clearly praises his most recent government statement (“empathic”) with its hints of opening and the apology to the cultural scene.

What now?

In a similarly precarious situation, Söder's predecessors used to convene basic conferences, long dialogue tours through all parts of the country.

Here too the Passau problem: face-to-face appointments are prohibited.
